We give you nine specific tips on how to get rid of ants. Think long term and go to the bottom with the big problem with the little pests.
Get to know your enemy
There are 4,000 species of ants, although in Europe we talk about four main species. All colonies are different in their unique way. In order to effectively overcome the problem, it is important that you find out what species you are dealing with, where the colony is located and where they are looking for food.
Give the ants what they want
Different species prefer different types of food. Some prefer carbohydrates, other proteins and a third sugar. By analyzing what species you are dealing with, you can more effectively attract the colony's food hunters to your bait.
Keep an eye on the calendar
Many species prefer a more protein-rich diet during the spring when the larvae develop, and then move on to get carbohydrate cravings to optimize their energy levels.
Use a wide bait
By using a bait that contains several different types of foods, such as the Bayer Maxforce Quantum, the analysis will not be as crucial. It is registered as a treatment for two specific species, but is effective regardless of which of the Nordic myrtles you are dealing with and regardless of the time of year. It works a bit like a buffet table for all types of ants.
Start early
Begin your use of bait early in the spring. Whether it is a type of colony with one or more queens, it is important to check its development as early as possible. The more eggs the queen can lay, the bigger the problem you have to deal with. And colonies with multiple queens grow exponentially as more queens are born and in turn lay new eggs. By killing one or more queens early, the problem is significantly reduced and the chance of killing the colony as a whole increases significantly.
Get to the root of your problem
By using gel bait, like Bayer Maxforce Quantum, instead of spray, you get to the colony itself and not just the part that moves above ground. The ants you see in the property or on the surrounding plot of land are only 5-10 percent of the total colony, which is in the ground or marshland. Sprays kill ants faster, but only those exposed directly to the spray. Gel works so that the ants that collect food above ground take the bait into the colony and there are also other ants exposed to the killing substances. Even the queen gets her food through the work ants that collect food and you have the chance to reach her too. The gel acts as a Trojan horse.
Remember the law of least resistance The
ants who collect food do not want to go further than necessary to obtain food and they do not want to look for new places as long as they have a reliable food source. So make it easy for them by placing the bait in their natural walkways, preferably as close to the colony as possible. Make sure there is always bait to be found so the ants keep coming back. The agent does not kill directly, so the ants are able to transport large amounts of bait to the nest before they discover it is harmful. If you find the colony itself, you can even drop bait directly into the nest.
Protect your pasture
Make sure the pasture does not disappear in any other way than through the ants it is intended for. Use bait boxes that protect the gel from weather and wind, from accidental cleaning and the like. If you do not use boxes, you should consider choosing a place that is protected from rain and does not have an absorbent surface
Think about the environment
By using gel instead of spray, you have a lesser impact on the environment. Spray must be applied in larger quantities and over larger areas. The gel contains small amounts of poison and is more target specific. The impact on the environment, in addition to the bog itself, is minimal.
